Our services
Warm, creative and spiritual
What's a typical Shir Hadash service? Well, there's no such thing as a
typical Shir Hadash service. If you're used to routine, mind-numbing,
by-the-book services (yawn), we think you'll find our approach refreshing. Our
goal is for every service to offer something for your heart, soul and mind --
and for you to leave our services feeling spiritually refreshed and ready to
continue the task of tikkun olam ("repair of the world"). Many of our services
are led by our rabbi, some are led by our members, but one way or another, just
about everyone can get involved.
On Friday evenings, we often begin our services by singing a niggun (a
wordless melody). Then we come together as a community to light the Shabbat
candles. Against a backdrop of dozens of flickering candles, our service
continues.
Typically, the second Friday of each month offers a fairly brief,
family-oriented service that begins at 6:30 p.m. and is followed by a delicious
communal potluck dinner. Most other Friday evenings feature a slightly longer,
more adult-oriented 7:30 p.m. service, usually focused around a theme. Whether that theme is humor or
healing, exploring the Jewish Jesus or honoring Jewish war veterans, the wisdom
of the Talmud or the week's Torah portion, expect intriguing readings, wonderful
music, informality, laughter, egalitarian participation and serious discussion,
followed by a friendly oneg.
On most Saturdays, Simcha's Minyan (named for beloved Shir member Sid "Simcha"
Fine, of blessed memory) starts at 9 a.m. We sing, read a portion of the Torah
and have a group discussion. One Saturday a month, our Family Shabbat services
start at 10 a.m., with a focus on teaching our religious school students how to
participate in services. And on a B'nai Mitzvah day, the honored child (or
adult) works with the rabbi to design his or her own unique service. Of course, all the holidays are celebrated in our synagogue as
well.
Volunteer musicians and cantorial soloists add a special beauty to services
on the holidays and many Shabbats. And at every service, you'll find the
sharing, supportive and welcoming community that makes Shir Hadash the unique
synagogue that it is.
David Brusin is our Rabbi.
Judy Tolkan and David Dropkin are the chairs of our Liturgy Committee. David Dropkin leads Simcha's Minyan and our Family
Shabbat services.
