Social justice

Shir Hadash members join other volunteers in serving Christmas dinner to the needy.

Caring, commitment and tikkun olam

Shir Hadash's social justice activities reach far outside the Jewish community while staying well within the best traditions of Judaism and Reconstructionism.

We serve meals to the homeless at St. Vincent De Paul's south side site. We are the only Jewish congregation in MICAH (Milwaukee Inner-city Congregations Allied for Hope), representing the interests of the poor. We turn study into action on urban problems through Tikkun Ha Ir ("repair of the city"), working with Orthodox, Conservative and Reform congregations and Hillel on the needs of the homeless and the hungry.

Our Social Justice Committee meets monthly at the Casablanca restaurant on the lower east side. It is usually a fast-paced discussion of activities, talking about how to involve more members and collaborating on various projects. We also tend to spend some time on local and national political issues during the past month. We invite all those interested in getting involved to contact us or come to one of our meetings.

Karyn Rotker is our Social Justice Committee chair.
