A new path. A new song. A new school.

Hebrew and Judaica, the Reconstructionist way

Shir Hadash students review the 'fruits' of their labor during a Tu B'Shevat lesson.

Imagine a religious school where your children learn not only how we pray, but why we pray. A place where they discover what it means to live our Jewish values. A place where studying is a joy, not a chore.

At Congregation Shir Hadash, we imagined that kind of school. And now we’ve created it, not just for our own congregation’s members, but for anyone in the Jewish community who wants a unique educational experience for their children.

Our school reflects the spirit and the substance of our dynamic, creative congregation and of Reconstructionist Judaism. Students learn to participate in a vibrant Jewish community; to understand the meaning of prayer and Shabbat; and to carry on the work of tikkun olam, the repair of the world. And they have fun doing it.

Children from grades 3 through 6 learn about Judaism from a Reconstructionist perspective. Integrated into the program, we offer a mastery Hebrew program that allows each student to learn at his or her own pace.

Starting after High Holy Days and continuing through May, classes meet twice weekly, on Wednesdays and on most Sundays, at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School. One Saturday morning each month, students and their parents participate in a hands-on, child-driven Shabbat service in our space on the lower level of Congregation Beth El Ner Tamid in Mequon. These services are also open to our young learners class and the rest of the congregation.

We hope the program will motivate its participants to engage in the study of Judaism and to love being Jewish. We hope our youth develop a sense of what it means to be Jewish and to identify with each other, our synagogue, our community, our people and our world. And we hope that all of our members take the time to become involved and to support the school by sharing their talents as guest musicians, storytellers, artists, chefs, etc.

Contact us for more information or to register your child for classes.

Chris Cowles is the instructor for this class. David Dropkin leads our Family Shabbat services.
